MEN’S SOCCER

September 5, 2017 Sports

The HU men’s soccer team didn’t back down from the nation’s 15-ranked team in Union College and got the result by drawing even with the Bulldogs 0-0 after two extra periods at the University of the Cumberlands Classic Friday afternoon.

With this win, the Foresters move to 1-1-1 on the year.

Senior Troy Hester went the distance in goal for the shutout and had the backing of his teammates to limit Union to just three shots for the match, only one of which was on goal.

“Collectively from Troy to our backline, to hold that caliber of a team to three shots is a testament to our commitment on that side of the ball,” said Coach Lawson. “We were courageous, locked in and connected well between the lines.”

While the Bulldogs also got the job done defensively for the shutout, the Foresters took twice as many shots as Union to finish with six shots, three on frame. Lawson’s squad also registered nine corner kicks to UC’s three.

“Even though it was a defensive battle, we had large portion of the game where we grew offensively,” said Lawson. “We were connecting well and we were smart with the ball.

“Union didn’t give us free looks but we still managed a handful of half chances – and that’s what you’re going to get when you play a team of that caliber. They are worthy of their No. 15 ranking.”

The Foresters have tomorrow off before taking on Cumberlands on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
