VOLLEYBALL

September 7, 2017 Sports

The HU volleyball team came out strong Wednesday night against Taylor University (7-3, 1-1) to dominate set one before dropping the next three to suffer a 3-1 loss, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19, 26-24, to the Trojans in a Crossroads League clash at Odle Arena.

“We knew we had to come out strong and establish our pace early and we did,” said Coach Shondell. “The difficult thing with volleyball is it requires you to be able to rebuild dominance every set, not just once. We struggled developing a rhythm after the end of set one.”

The Trojans outhit the Foresters by seven, 55-48, and logged a .205 hitting percentage to HU’s .123. Both teams posted eight blocks and behind the line proved similar as well with Huntington tallying four aces and eight service errors while TU finished with two aces and seven service errors.

Offensively, Shondell’s crew was paced by Tailor Schultheis and Brandy Michie with 11 kills apiece. Danielle Gurwell and Josie Beaver added nine and seven kills respectively. The senior duo also led Huntington at the net defensively with Gurwell claiming 3.5 blocks which included two solos and Beaver registering two.

Breanna Levings handed out a team-best 27 assists while Kate Cobb topped the match in digs with 25.

While it wasn’t the result he was hoping for, Shondell still had plenty of positives to say about his team’s play. “Tailor gave us all she had tonight; unfortunately, her health prevented her from being able to stay in the match.

“Brandy is a steady weapon for us. She rarely lets situations like this prevent her from being successful and tonight showed that. Danielle was good all-around tonight. She found aggressive ways to score and she was a force at the net.”

The Foresters (6-6, 1-1) wrap up the week with a pair of home league matches – hosting Saint Francis on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Spring Arbor on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
