Devotional Thought for Chapel Credit (3/21/17)

March 21, 2017 Campus Ministries Comments Off on Devotional Thought for Chapel Credit (3/21/17) Posted By: Arthur Wilson, Dean of Spiritual Life & Campus Pastor

The Word – Philippians 3: 13-14

“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”

Once again, the apostle Paul demonstrated why he stood as the prime example for Christian living. It wasn’t because he lived a completely righteous life like Enoch and Job. It wasn’t because he had the ability to engage the intellectually elite in thought-provoking discussions. What made Paul’s example so powerful was his willingness to do what most wouldn’t. He kept it one hundred.

Notice that, in the text, Paul didn’t initiate his exhortation by listing his successes. But he chose to start off by highlighting the fact that he had fallen short of achieving the success expected of those whose lives had been transformed by the work of Christ. Paul was unashamed to make it known that the journey for the believer doesn’t always guarantee a life where achievement comes easy.

One admirable quality about the apostle was that he refused to allow his deficiencies to keep him from straining to reach His purpose in God through Christ Jesus. The reason why he was able to do this is because he chose to take on an attitude of amnesia concerning the hiccups in his past.

What a glorious day it will be when we can liberate our minds from the stains of our past. Imagine the impact that would have on our worship. Although the pursuit to reach our purpose in God requires that we push hard against resistance, we can reach it regardless of the number of times that we fail. There are times when the only way for us to get to the place where God wants us to be is by letting go of where we’ve been and focusing on where we’re going. I know that many of us have a checkered past. But I also believe that despite our suspect history we still have hope and purpose in Christ Jesus. So let this be the day when we choose to forget what’s behind and press forward. Press beyond the drama in your life. Press beyond your weaknesses and failures. Press beyond your selfish ambitions and desires. God is more than capable to see us through if we’d only exercise the will to press.
