Baseball

May 9, 2017 Sports Comments Off on Baseball Posted By: Joanne Green, SID

The top-seeded Huntington baseball team sent 4th-seeded Mount Vernon Nazarene University into the loser’s bracket of the Crossroads League Tournament Monday afternoon at Forest Glen with a 6-5 win over the Cougars. The Foresters now advance to the semifinals where they will face 7th-seeded Goshen College tomorrow at noon at Taylor University’s Gudakunst Field.

Today’s win wasn’t without dramatics as the Foresters had to come from behind to prevent the upset. After taking a 3-1 lead in the first that stood for the next three frames, HU watched their lead slowly slip away as the Cougars tied it up in the fifth and then picked up a run in the seventh and again in the eighth to enjoy a 5-3 lead.

But Coach Frame’s determined crew found a way to play spoiler to the upset-minded Cougars. After managing just two hits in their previous six at bats, Huntington pieced together a rally in the bottom of the eighth to plate three runs and climb back on top.

After two hit batters sandwiched a walk to load the bases with no outs, Will Coursen-Carr delivered a two-run single through the hole at short to knot things up at 5-5. With runners on the corners, Mount Vernon worked a double play at first and second but not before Kyle Selvey, pinching running for Andy Roser who was one of the hit batters, scored what proved to be the game-winner.

Tarrin Beachy slammed the door shut on any sort of last ditch effort by the Cougars as it was three up, three down for MVNU in the top of the ninth. Beachy, who relieved starting pitcher Tanner Wyse in the seventh, tossed the final three frames and gave up two hits, a run and two walks while striking out two for his third win of the year.

Just like the eighth, the Foresters had a little help from the Cougar pitching staff to score their first three runs. After Dalton Combs sent one long for the eighth time this season, Adam Roser drew a base on balls and came around to score on Dylan Henricks’ double to the fence in right-center. Mike Crowley wore one for the team, Andy Roser loaded the bases with a single into left and then Coursen-Carr drew HU’s second walk of the frame to plate run #3 for the early 3-1 tilt.

HU managed just six hits to Mount Vernon’s 12. Combs finished with a pair of hits including his dinger in the first while Coursen-Carr posted three RBI.

The Foresters are now 31-11 on the year.
