The #RV Huntington baseball team split with Mount Vernon (15.12, 6-12) on day one of their four-game series with the Cougars at Forest Glen. HU enjoyed a 10-6 win in the opener while the nightcap favored the guests 4-3.

The Foresters packed all the offense they needed in game one into the first two frames by plating three runs in the first and then racking up another four in their next at-bat. Daniel Lichty knocked in HU’s first two runs with a single up the middle and then came around to score on the first of three MVNU errors.

Lichty was at it again in the second with another RBI-single but not before Kallen Kelsheimer cranked one out of the park for his first collegiate dinger. Satchell Wilson wrapped up the inning by doubling in a pair of runs to push Huntington’s lead to 7-0.

The Cougars battled back to post runs in the third, fourth and seventh frames to close to within one at 7-6 but the Foresters made sure things didn’t end so close. The bottom of the eighth saw Langston Ginder, who led off with a walk, eventually score on a wild throw after which Wilson pounded out his second two-run double of the afternoon to pile on a few more insurance runs.

Camden Dice spent the first eight frames on the bump to earn the win and remain perfect on the year at 5-0. He gave up ten hits, six runs, five of which were earned, and a walk while striking out three after which Brent Turner closed things out by working a three up, three down ninth.

Lichty and Satchell were dominate at the plate – each tallying four hits and three RBI to account for all but four of their team’s hits.

The fifth frame of the nightcap was HU’s downfall. In addition to allowing two hits, the hosts also committed a pair of blunders to the tune of three runs to hand over a short-lived lead. One inning prior, Wilson had collected his third RBI-double of the day and then made his way home on a Jarret Gray single to left-center to give his team a 2-1 lead over MVNU.

Down 4-2 after five, the Foresters spent the last two innings chasing Mount Vernon. After leaving two runners stranded in the sixth, Frame’s crew took advantage of a hit batter with bases loaded in the seventh to pull within one but unfortunately couldn’t close the deal as the bases remained loaded by the final out without any more changes to the scoreboard.

Missed opportunities plagued HU all afternoon as evidenced by leaving ten on base over the course of the game.

Alex McCutcheon was charged with the loss having given up six hits and four runs, three of which were earned, while striking out two. The Huntington native also picked up a pair of hits and an RBI.

The Foresters (19-7, 12-6) wrap up their series against the Cougars today with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
