SOFTBALL

In their second meeting of the year, the HU softball team (19-15) split with their non-conference neighbors Indiana Tech (11-15) Friday afternoon. It was the same result the first time these two squads faced off last month.

Today saw Gower’s crew outlast the Warriors 7-1 in the opener before a late-game surge by Tech in the nightcap made for a 6-1 tilt in favor of the guests.

Meghan Fretz dominated the Warriors in game one by allowing just three hits, one run and a walk while striking out two in six innings of work for the win.

Tech’s only run was in the second and held until the fourth when HU unleashed for four runs to capture the lead and never look back. Huntington scored twice on a botched Warrior play before Abigail Reed’s RBI-ground and Jenessa Hasty’s infield single added two more to the scoreboard.

The Foresters piled on two more runs in the fifth with Kaela Robey’s solo shot on a 0-0 count highlighting the afternoon. Kennedy Krull topped off her team’s scoring with an RBI-double in the sixth.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel until the eighth when Tech finally cracked HU’s pitching staff to the tune of five runs. It was a 1-1 game until the Warriors went off in the extra inning.

Courtney Mason sent one long in the fifth, the first of her collegiate career, to account for Huntington’s only offense in the second game. The visitors’ equalizer came in their next at-bat to extend the game as both teams left runners stranded in the seventh.

Mica Allen was the fourth Forester to take a turn in the circle. She tossed the eighth to be charged with the loss having given up five hits, five runs and a walk while striking out one.

With the postponement of tomorrow’s doubleheader against Saint Francis, HU is back in action on Tuesday when they host Spring Arbor at 3:00 p.m.
