The Forester golf program was back in action over the weekend at the Taylor-hosted Ackerman-Allen Shootout where the HU women took fifth and the men finished eighth.

Alexandria Maris was a picture of consistency, shooting an 83 both rounds to lead Sholund’s crew with a 166 for the 18th spot out of 38 golfers.

Danielle Tinsley fired a 169 (81-88) to finish 19th. Abby Sheehan turned in a 178 (91-87) while Lexy Turpchinoff (85-94) and Katie Springer (88-94) carded a 179 and 182 respectively.

Coach Rick Sholund likes what he sees from his team. “Alex has been more consistent with her scores this year and if she keeps big numbers off her card, she will have a strong conference tournament. Danielle is starting to gain confidence in what she can do at the college level.

Lexy and Katie are playing with more confidence as well.  The work they have put in on short game is paying off. Abby is at the brink of being strong player.  She has power and her ball striking is becoming a strength.”

Taylor claimed the women’s title with a 635 followed by IWU (639), Bethel (640), Olivet Nazarene (677), HU (689), Mount Vernon (691) and Spring Arbor (700).

“We are doing good things right now,” said Sholund. “I believe in this group and want them to start believing in themselves more.”

On the men’s side, Mitchell Wilson paced Huntington with a 156 (78-78) to claim 15th out of 53 golfers. David Beck posted a 161 (76-85) as did Chance Bressler (83-78) for a share of 27th place. Rounding out HU’s play was Carter Roseboom (82-86) and Colby Martin (87-84) with a 168 and 171 respectively.

“I’m encouraged by what the guys are doing,” said Sholund. “Mitch did well at this event. He competes for every shot every round at a high level. He’s a freshman and growing very quickly at the collegiate level.

“David put himself in position to be in the top ten. He will get better at putting two rounds together. Chance had a great short game for us this week.”

Sholund went on to praise his other players as well. “Carter has power and us showing good signs around the green.  When he makes the right decisions off the tee and improves from 100-150, his scores will be right where he wants them.

“Colby is doing better in qualifying; he just needs to be more composed and confident in tournaments.”

Parkland took home the men’s title with a 591 followed by Taylor (595), Spring Arbor (616), IWU (621), Olivet Nazarene (628), Grace (631), Mount Vernon (639), HU (644), Taylor B (646) and Bethel (665).

The Foresters now turn their attention to the Crossroads League Tournament. The men compete April 26-27 while the women are slated to compete May 3-4.
