WOMEN’S GOLF

The HU women’s golf team kick off their season over Labor Day Weekend by hosting the Battle at Brookwood where they finished fourth with an overall score of 649 (315-334). With their score of 315 on Monday, the Foresters established a new program record.

“These are exciting times for our program.  We started a junior, three sophomores and a freshman and beat the school team record,” said Coach Rick Sholund. “That 315 on Monday put us in position to compete for a win and that is exciting.”

Freshman Kira Moore paced Sholund’s crew by firing a ten-over-par 154 (75, 79) over the course of the two-day event at Brookwood Golf Club. The rookie set a new program record for 18 holes with her 75 on Monday. She finished ninth overall out of 38 golfers. Danielle Tinsley was three strokes back at 157 (76, 81) for 11th place.

Abby Sheehan and Lauren Slottke shot identical scores each day to turn in  a 169 (82-87). Other scores for HU included Lexy Turpchinoff (85-91–176), Akira Seals-Perkins (91-9–182) and Katie Springer (91-97–188).

“We did not finish out the way we would want but we put ourselves in that position,” noted Sholund. “We will learn from it and get more comfortable with it. We showed a lot of improvement in minimizing mistakes while making long runs of good holes.

“We have been focusing on course management and short game and the progress was visible. This is a great group of girls who are coachable and focused on learning.  I am very proud of and happy for them, that they experienced some success to build on at the start the year.”

Huntington is back in action on September 10-11 to compete in the Players Club Invitational.
