VOLLEYBALL

The HU volleyball team took set one against #RV Mount Vernon Wednesday night at Platt Arena before dropping the next three, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-14, to suffer their second loss to the Cougars this season.

The energy in Platt Arena from both sides was electric through the first three sets before MVNU (20-4, 9-3) snagged an early advantage in the fourth set after which they were able to ride out the W without event for their 20th win of the year.

“I am proud of how we competed in the first three sets,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “We struggled to pass and hit around the block in set four, which hurt us.

“We allowed it to lead to a mental unraveling, which is the difference between where we currently are in the conference compared to where we can be. I’m excited to see what’s to come for this team as we use this as motivation and become better because of it.”

With this loss, the Foresters drop to 9-14 overall which includes a 3-9 record in CL action. With six league matches remaining, Herber’s crew is in a tie for sixth with Spring Arbor, Saint Francis and Grace.

De’Janea Johnson and Kortney Grimm pounded down 13 kills apiece to lead Huntington offensively. At the middle spot, Tya Bynum and Mayah Schundelmier added eight and six kills respectively. In addition to orchestrating the offense with 38 assists, Morgan Robrock logged seven digs and four kills on the night.

“Morgan played incredible defense tonight,” noted Herber. “Our outsides did an excellent job mixing up their shots, and I’m proud of Mayah  for stepping up in the middle position and bringing energy to the floor.”

Defensively, Hannah Maier topped the Foresters with 13 digs while Grimm posted 12 and Mikailah Thompson collected ten.

HU will take a break from league play this weekend to play in the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech.
