MEN’S GOLF
The HU men’s golf team headed to the Mitten earlier this week to compete in the Egypt Valley Intercollegiate where they finished seventh by firing a 959 (314-321-324) over the course of the two-day event at Egypt Valley Country Club.
“Overall, we are staying fairly consistent in scoring, but we are letting rounds get away at the end and had a few poor putting rounds,” said Coach Rick Sholund. “On the positive side, they are more competitive and gaining confidence. They compete out there and I appreciate that about them.”
David Beck was consistent over the course of his three rounds to pace Sholund’s crew with a 235 (79-78-78) and a 19th place finish out of 49 golfers.
“David had three strong rounds that were hurt by a big number or two in each,” noted Sholund. “I’m really proud of how he bounced back after each bad hole. He’s showing a lot of senior leadership on the course in how he carries himself and how moves on from his mistakes quickly.
“If he can avoid the big numbers, he will get back to the scores he’s capable of.”
Quin Edwards posted a 239 (78-83-78) for 28th place. Colby Martin carded a 244 (82-79-83) to finish 35th while only one shot separated Chance Bressler (T38th, 247) and Peyton Richmond (40th, 248).
Coach Sholund remains optimistic about the play of his athletes. “Colby was close to a solid score in round two before a couple of costly mistakes on the last two. He’s really improved this year and is very close to the scores he wants.
“Our freshmen Quin and Peyton are fun to watch and grind for every shot. They are learning a lot right now and have both posted some strong rounds. We are excited about their progress and know they will settle into college golf and find the consistent scoring they want.”
“Chance has found a consistency this year and is gaining a confidence and a belief in himself. He had a solid start to this tournament and let it slip but he’s been doing a good job of learning from his mistakes this year and I’m confident he will do that at our next event.”
The Foresters wrap up the fall portion of their season with their own invitational, the Chariot Run Challenge, slated for October 22-23.
