WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Huntington women’s soccer team got back into the win column Tuesday afternoon at King Stadium against Great Lakes Christian 2-1 in a first time clash between the two programs. The win snapped the Foresters three-game losing streak.
HU came out on fire to start the game when senior Courtney McKown received a well-placed pass from Mapuana Stephens and found the back left corner of the net to take the early 1-0 lead of the contest. The score marked McKown’s fourth goal on the season and her 14th overall in a Forester uniform.
The Crusaders evened the score in the 62nd minute on a goal by Randi Fitzgerald, but HU said not so fast. With just under 20 minutes remaining, Reagan Sanderson buried a deflected shot from Ashtyn Patrick off a restart to give her team a 2-1 lead that proved the game-winner.
The goal by Sanderson was the sophomore’s third of the season and overall in her young career as a Forester.
Fitzgerald’s goal was Great Lakes only shot of the day while Huntington fired off 25 shots, 18 on frame.
“This was a good overall team effort today,” said Coach David Lewis. “It is something we can build off of for the rest of the season.”
The non-conference win raises the Foresters overall record to 4-7-3 on the season. The Foresters will be back in action Saturday night when they travel to Mishawaka to take on Crossroads League foe Bethel.
