WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Saints of Aquinas College snapped a six-game win streak the Forester women’s basketball team carried into Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center Tuesday night by handing their visitors a 51-44 loss. It was Aquinas’ first win over HU since 2013.

While Huntington’s defense was on point as evidenced by holding their hosts to just 51 points on 37.5 percent shooting, it was at the other end of the court in the middle quarters that was their demise.

After building a slight 16-14 advantage after the first ten minutes and adding another four points to that lead two minutes into the second quarter, things went south for HU. A lid seemed to find its way on the visitors’ rim as they managed just six points over the next 14 minutes to dig themselves in a 33-26 hole.

The difference grew to 11 by quarter’s end but quit is not in the Foresters’ vocabulary. A layup by Konnor Gambrell and long ball by Annie Seboe to start the fourth cut the lead in half at 39-33 with 7:34 to go. The Saints fired back to build their lead back to 11 at 48-37 with just over three minutes remaining but Huntington had one final push.

A long two by Celeste Ryman at the top of the key ignited a seven-point run that saw Emily Seboe connect on a traditional three-point play and Jenessa Hasty score in transition for a 48-44 difference with :47 ticks remaining. Unfortunately, time was the enemy at that point as HU was forced to foul allowing Aquinas to pull away.

Seboe finished with 15 points to pace Culler’s crew. Ryman added 12 points, four steals and three assists.

Eliza Brown poured in 15 points to share game-high scoring honors with Seboe. Marissa Brady dropped in ten points and grabbed that same number of rebounds for a double double.

The Foresters (2-3) return to Platt Arena this weekend to host their own classic. HU will face IU Southeast on Friday at 8:00 p.m.
