WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Pilots of Bethel University used a strong second half to hand the HU women’s basketball team a 91-70 loss Tuesday night at Wiekamp Athletic Center. It’s BU’s first win against their guests since 2016 and snapped a ten-game win streak the Foresters carried into the contest.

The Pilots’ brand of basketball that features five-person subbing every minute, a full court trapping defense and an offense that thrives on scoring within ten seconds of every possession made for plenty of action and chaos that often felt more like a track meet than a basketball game.

Down by 14, 30-16, early in the second quarter, Huntington kept their wits about them to climb back in it thanks to the play of rookies Alli Vaughn and Ruby Bolon. The pair accounted for all but four points in a four-minute stretch that saw Vaughn pour in ten points, which included two traditional three-point plays, and Bolon score six on the way to HU jumping in front 36-35 with four minutes to go in the half.

Bethel (6-4, 2-0) headed into the locker room up by two at 41-39 and then took control of the second frame adding ten more to their lead after three quarters and then cushioning that advantage by nine more by the final buzzer.

When all was said and done, the two teams committed a combined 53 turnovers. HU shot 42.9 percent from the field to BU’s 45.5 percent. The Pilots scored 39 points from deep to Huntington’s 15 and outscored their visitors 35-15 in points off turnovers.

Maddy Robrock fueled HU’s offense with a game-best 16 points by going 7-for-12 from the floor and a perfect 2-for-2 from the line. Vaughn finished with 15 points off the bench. The duo each grabbed six boards while Emily Seboe tracked down a game-best eight rebounds.

Amanda Lovejoy knocked down three from downtown on her way of posting a career-best nine points. Kyra Baker also had a banner night by dishing out a game- and career-high six assists.

The Pilots were led by Kallie McElroy’s 14 points while Jazmen Watts (13), Maiah Shelton (13) and Nyla Asad (10) also scored in double figures.

The Foresters (2-7, 0-2) are back in action on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. to face Spring Arbor.
