The Huntington baseball team (5-9, 3-3) outlasted Taylor, 8-7, in the nightcap at Winterholter Field after dropping a 6-0 decision in the opener to split the first doubleheader of a four-game series with the Trojans (14-8, 4-2).
After seven uneventful innings for both teams in game one, the Trojans unleashed for all six of their runs in the eighth by cashing in on five of their seven hits and taking advantage of two HU blunders.
Langston Ginder was the only Forester to offer any offense. The junior second baseman picked up a hit and drew a walk in the nine-inning affair to make for a quick win for the Trojans.
After tossing a shutout through the first seven frames, Camden Dice was eventually charged with the loss having given up five hits, four runs and three walks while striking out seven.
The nightcap saw Coach Frame’s crew crank out seven hits and take advantage of five Taylor errors to avenge their earlier loss. Satchell Wilson led the charge with two hits and four RBI with his first at bat his biggest, a three-run blast in the top of the first. He singled in another run in the sixth and then made his way around the bases via a pair of steals before scoring on an error.
It was the second of three blunders the Trojans committed in the frame as all three of HU’s runs in their at bat were of the unearned variety. The sixth proved pivotal as it not only gave the guests back the lead, having headed into the inning all tied up at five, but also included the game-winning run that pinch runner Ryan Hale scored on TU’s third error.
Ginder also played a big role in the win with two hits, which included an RBI-single in the third, while finding a way to score three times. He also slammed the door shut on a potential Taylor comeback. With the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh, the Huntertown native worked a double play on a line drive to end the game.
Tyler Papenbrock tossed the first 4.1 innings before being relieved by Isaac Horton who tallied the win. In 1.2 frames, the sophomore hurler gave up three hits, two runs and a walk while striking out two. After the Trojans scored twice in the seventh to pull within one of HU, Graham Kollen relieved Horton and worked the final three outs to be credited with the save.
The doubleheader against Taylor originally slated for tomorrow has been moved to Monday. Opening pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
