WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Huntington women’s soccer team moved to 2-3 on the season with a 3-0 win over Manchester in a neighborly non-conference clash Wednesday afternoon at King Stadium. It’s the Foresters’ second clean sheet of the year with the first an 8-0 thrashing against IUSB two games back.
The last ten outings against the Spartans have favored HU 8-2. The loss leaves Manchester still looking for their first win of the year at 0-3.
Paige Weiss got things started for the hosts when she blasted a shot upper 90 far post that scuffed the fingertips of the Manchester keeper just over eight minutes into the match. The goal is Weiss’ third of the season.
Ten minutes later, Cotter found side netting after a beautiful feed from Claire Whipple to up the lead to 2-0. She was at it again late in the game, this time with a tap in when she ran up on a beautifully placed cross from Weiss. Cotter’s two goals are the first of the season for the junior forward, the fourth of her career.
The Foresters were clearly in command from start to finish as not only indicated by the final score but in possession as well. HU outshot their guests 23-2 and finished with six corners to the Spartans’ one. Ireland Aerni and Tara Robinson both spent time in frame with Aerni posting the win having camped out in goal for the first 76 minutes.
“The team connected their passes well today and made good use of the field throughout the match,” said Coach David Lewis. “They have been working hard and it was nice to see them rewarded with the result.”
HU hits the road on Saturday to face Siena Heights at 1:00 p.m.
