VOLLEYBALL

It was Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Platt Arena so it only seemed fitting that the seniors paced the HU volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Goshen.

Offensively, seniors De’Janea Johnson and Tya Bynum went off for 12 and 11 kills respectively. Kortney Grimm added ten kills while Maisyn Robrock put down nine. As a team, the Foresters racked up 52 kills to GC’s 36.

Kendyll Gebert, the third senior, took charge of organizing the offense as evidenced by dishing out a team-best 22 assists. Layla Meyer posted some impressive numbers. In addition to tracking down 15 digs, the freshman libero served up nine aces.

Huntington came out fired up to snatch up two quick wins only to watch the Maple Leafs come back to win set three. A chance to regroup was exactly what Herber and crew needed as they never trailed in the fourth and final set.

“Our goal today was to play at our highest level and to consider nothing other than that success,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “While we accomplished this in the first two sets, losing the third was inexcusable.

“We will fix this in practice on Monday because we have a big final week of conference play before we head into postseason where we need to be peaking.”

HU has logged nine straight wins over Goshen (2-28, 0-15). With today’s win, the Foresters improve to 14-15 overall which includes a 7-8 league record. With three games remaining, Herber and crew are currently tied for sixth with Saint Francis in the regular season conference standings.

Wednesday is HU’s final regular season home game against Mount Vernon at 7:00 p.m.
