VOLLEYBALL
Playing in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament, the 6th-seeded HU volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss (25-22, 25-16, 25-13) to 3rd-seeded Marian Saturday afternoon. The loss ends Huntington’s season while the Knights advance to the semis to face 2nd-seeded IWU on Wednesday.
It’s the third time these two squads have faced off this fall with MU winning in three the first time around while Huntington returned the favor by sweeping the Knights a month later.
While total kills only slightly favored the hosts, 33-32, errors did the Foresters in as they had three times as many as Marian. MU’s block was the main culprit having racked up nine stuffs to HU’s four.
Senior De’Janea Johnson posted eight kills to pace HU’s offense. Haley Kruse recorded six kills while Tya Bynum and Morgan Robrock each put down five. Robrock also handed out 21 dimes and tracked down nine digs.
Defensively, Layla Meyer contributed with a match-best 15 digs while Kortney Grimm added 12.
“The hardest part of my job is saying goodbye to players who aren’t returning next year when our season comes to an end,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “I’m forever grateful for how De’Janea, Kendyll and Mariah have impacted this program on and off the court.
“We made a lot of growth this year, and I’m eager for what next season will hold for this team. We will utilize our spring season to improve and be better moving forward.”
Huntington wraps up the year with an overall record of 15-18.
