WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Playing in the friendly confines of Platt Arena Saturday night, the HU women’s basketball team took care of business by notching a 56-40 win over IU Kokomo (0-4). With this win, the Foresters improve to 2-2.

Gabi Melby kick-started HU’s offense by scoring nine of her team’s first 11 points. The 5-4 point guard drained back-to-back threes to turn HU’s only deficit of the day, a 2-0 difference, into a 6-2 advantage. There was no looking back after that as the hosts opened up a 17-4 lead that was never really challenged as it dipped to single digits just once after that.

By halftime, the Foresters had given up only five field goals on the way to enjoying a 26-12 lead. Maggard’s crew distanced themselves from the Cougars by six more points in the third before opening up their largest lead of the game, a 46-23 discrepancy to start the fourth, compliments of an Emily Seboe bucket from downtown.

When all was said and down, HU settled for the 16-point victory behind Melby’s 15-point performance. She also registered seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Seboe finished with eight points as did freshman Laura Valiente-Marin. Logan Rowles, off the bench, tossed in seven points on 3-for-4 shooting. Konnor Gambrell’s eight rebounds was a game-tying best as IUK’s Anna Kiser also finished with eight boards.

Kristen Ridner tallied ten points as the Cougars’ only double-digit scorer.

HU is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to IU South Bend for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off with the Titans.
