MEN’S BASKETBALL

Junior Ben Humrichous entered Wednesday’s contest against Taylor (13-11, 7-7) needing just five points to become the 53rd member of Huntington’s 1,000 point club. As is fitting for the team’s best three-point shooter, the 6-8 forward drained one from downtown 90 seconds into the second half to officially become a member of this elite group of Foresters.

It gave his team a 43-27 lead on the way to their 77-57 win over the Trojans at Odle Arena. To date, Humrichous has 1,000 career points. For his career, he is averaging 11.8 points per night.

The Foresters, who love to get out and score quickly, were lulled into Taylor’s methodical approach to the game early on. Up by one at 23-22 with seven minutes left in the first half, the guests were able to close out the frame playing their style of ball. Behind eight points from Lane Sparks, HU pieced together a 17-3 run to grow their lead to 40-25 by the midway point.

Huntington enjoyed a double-digit advantage throughout the first 12 minutes of the second period before Kaden Furhmann’s trey with 6:31 to go trimmed Taylor’s deficit to eight at 61-53. Alford’s crew wasted little time responding. Joel Dyer scored on the next possession after which Zach Goodline cashed in on an old-fashioned three-point play to quickly up the lead back to double figures at 67-53 by the 5:13 mark.

Mitchell Wilson dropped in a pair of triples after that to further distance his team from the Trojans to make for the final 20-point disparity.

Goodline topped all scorers with 25 points in addition to grabbing six rebounds and handing out five dimes. Sparks added 21 points while Landen Jordan finished with 13. Jordan also snarled  a game-best eight rebounds.

The Trojans were paced by Fuhrmann’s 19 points while Jason Hubbard posted 16 points and seven boards.

Huntington improves to 18-6 on the year which includes a 10-4 league record, just one game behind IWU and Grace who are both 11-3 in conference play. The Foresters are on the road again Saturday to face #16 Marian.
