WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

In a game where both teams pride themselves defensively, it was the #6 Knights (14-1, 4-0) of Marian University that put the clamps on the HU women’s basketball team to the tune of a 69-48 decision Saturday afternoon at Platt Arena.

While it wasn’t the outcome the Foresters were hoping for, the hosts got the job done defensively. They were able to limit one of the nation’s most efficient offensive squads to well below their season average. It marked the third time this year MU, a team averaging over 80 points per outing, was held to less than 70 points.

Unfortunately, the Knights’ defensive pressure made it difficult for Huntington to get into any sort of groove as evidenced by allowing just 16 field goals. Forty-eight points is HU’s lowest offensive output of the season. MU scored 14 of the game’s first 15 points forcing Maggard and crew to play catch up all afternoon.  It was a 21-11 difference after the first ten minutes and 37-21 by halftime.

Marian continued to build on their lead in the third quarter but finally in the fourth, HU got a few points back by outscoring their visitors 14-11.

Bailey Kelham topped the Foresters with 16 points. Gabi Melby finished with 14 to go along with four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Emily Seboe topped all rebounders with eight.

The Knights were paced by Ella Collier’s 20 points while Kinnidy Garrard chipped in 17.

HU (9-6, 3-2) will look to bounce back at Grace on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
