MEN’S BASKETBALL

The HU men’s basketball team ranks fifth in the NAIA in scoring with today’s 100-64 win over Goshen a testament to that ranking. Alford’s squad averages 91.6 points per game with this afternoon’s showing the fifth time this season they’ve put up triple digits.

Eleven of Huntington’s 13 wins have been by double figures. It took the Foresters a little longer than expected to pull away from the Maple Leafs with their first double-digit lead coming after nine minutes of play when Joel Dyer canned a three for a 26-15 HU lead.  His triple came in the middle of an 11-0 run that more than doubled up GC, 31-15, when all was said and done.

By halftime, Huntington had grown their advantage to 46-29 with the second period more of the same to make for the runaway win.

As a team, HU logged their second highest field goal percentage of the season by dropping in 58.0 percent of their attempts (40-for-69). The hosts also drained 14 from downtown which proves their second most threes in a game this year.

Lane Sparks led the Foresters with 24 points by going an efficient 10-for-14 from the floor. Zach Goodline missed just three shots on his way to pouring in 20. Cade Brenner finished with a career-best 14 points which included going 4-for-7 from deep. Rounding out HU’s double digit scoring was Landen Jordan with 13.

Gage McGuire came off the bench to lead HU in rebounding with seven.

The Maple Leafs (0-19, 0-9) were paced by Marcus Northern’s 16 points. Judah Simfukwee added 15. Kevin Cota tossed in 13 while Karson Jenkins finished with 11.

Today’s win is HU’s third straight as they wrap up first round action of league play with a 6-3 record for fourth place in the standings. It’s the best start in the CL for the Foresters since Alford took over the reins. Huntington, 13-6 overall, is back in action on Saturday to host #5 Indiana Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m.
