BASEBALL
The HU baseball team made the short trip to Fort Wayne Monday afternoon to finish their series with Saint Francis. The Foresters held on for a 13-11 win in the opener before the Cougars sent their guests home with a 7-2 loss in the nightcap. The four-game series ended in a split as Frame and crew move to 9-9 on the year, 5-3 in league play.
Both teams put on an offensive clinic in the opener. The Foresters scored in each of the first six frames while the Cougars plated their 11 runs in three innings. The visitors held their breath in the ninth, giving up five runs, to narrowly escape Cougar Field with the win.
HU pounded out nine hits for the game but more notable was the 17 base on balls they worked which resulted in walking in six runs. Huntington found home three more times by way of sacrifice flies. Kade Flores logged a pair of RBI-singles in back-to-back innings while Bryce Deckman and Gregory Nolasco Berroa each posted a run-scoring base knock.
Deckman finished with three hits and just as many RBI to lead HU at the plate. Flores added two hits and two RBI. Berroa also collected a pair of RBI while six other Foresters were credited with an RBI over the course of the nine-inning affair.
The Foresters headed into the ninth up 13-6 only to watch their lead shrivel to just two before reliever Isaac Horton worked the final out to call it quits an notch the save.
Grant Simmons was credited with the win having tossed four scoreless innings in relief. He gave up five hits and two walks while striking out three.
The nightcap had a much different feel as both squads managed just six hits apiece with USF jumping out to a 7-0 lead before HU finally got on the board in the seventh compliments of a two-run homer by designated hitter Zach Pelletier. It was the only offense HU mustered to make for a quick game two.
Starting pitcher RJ Anglin suffered the loss. He spent 3.1 innings on the bump and gave up five hits, six runs and four walks while striking out five.
The Foresters take a break from league play to host Manchester tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.
