WOMEN’S SOCCER
The HU women’s soccer team dominated Grace Christian Thursday afternoon at King Stadium to the tune of a 4-0 shutout. The Foresters have given up just three goals this season. After giving up two goals on opening day, HU has allowed just one goal over the past six outings.
Tonight’s performance saw the hosts in attack mode throughout the entire afternoon with the most telling evidence based on what didn’t happen which was a Tiger shot. While HU held their visitors shotless, at the other end of the pitch they took target practice at GCU keeper Amiah Lake by firing off 28 shots, 22 of which were on target.
Ironically, Huntington’s first goal was an own goal after Rhya Holliday sent a cross into the box that deflected off the head of a GCU defender and into the net. Five minutes later at the 38:51 mark after a feed from Elana McGinnis, Sophie Shepherd got it to her left foot to find herself an open net that she took full advantage of for her seventh goal of the year.
The sophomore forward is averaging a goal a game this season with 13 career goals to date. HU’s 2-0 advantage carried into halftime, and it wasn’t until the 70th minute that Maria Cote Molina cushioned the lead when she slotted the keeper for the third goal of the game and her third of the year.
With 13 minutes remaining, Madeline Gile sizzled back netting when she ran onto a ball from Channing Crawford that skipped through the box. The goal was Gile’s first of the year, the fifth of her career in Forester green.
Macie Sanders and Tara Robinson split time in goal with neither having much action thanks to HU’s aggressiveness at the other end of the field. To say it was a team win was an understatement as 23 Foresters spent time on the field with four different players finding back netting and all four goals assisted.
With today’s win, Huntington improves to 5-1-1. Next up is a matchup with IU East on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Eaton High School.
