WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Huntington University women’s volleyball team (10-5, 2-2) took down the Taylor University Trojans (6-10, 1-3 CL) on Saturday afternoon in Platt Arena in a three set sweep (25-18, 25-19, 25-16).
Early in the opening set, HU traded points with Taylor before gaining traction and taking the opener 25-18. In set two, the score was tied at 12 apiece before a pair of four point runs helped the Foresters to a 25-19 win. HU used a 19-9 run thanks to a .409 hitting percentage in the third set to secure the sweep and third straight match win over Taylor.
The Forester defense was strong throughout the match as they held the Trojans to a meek .019 hitting percentage compared to the Foresters fierce hit percentage of .247. Lauren Ross, Leah Carter, and Trevyn Terry teamed up for 13 assisted blocks, while the Trojans as a team only tallied one block on the day.
Maisyn Robrock led the HU offensive attack with eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Haley Kruse recorded seven kills and seven digs, while three Foresters each contributed five kills (Terry, Grimm, Ross). Olivia Krahn and Leyla Meyer notched seven and nine digs respectively to help HU cover the backline with strong defensive support from Makailah Thompson.
“A key component of our game plan was to play disciplined and relentless defense” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “I think we did just that! We limited their runs and aggressively attacked the shots that we knew would be available to us. It was a great team win to get us back on track.”
Marian University will host the Foresters on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. inside the Marian University Physical Education Center. The Knights (12-2, 3-1) will be looking to bounce back after dropping a five set match on Saturday to MVNU.
