Jamaica Service Learning Trip
The Friesen Center is taking students to Jamaica on a vocational journey this May!
Students will experience their major in Jamaican culture and work on a service project while staying on campus in Highgate, Jamaica. The entire group stays together, eats meals prepared by a Jamaican cook, and enjoys devotionals at night and group games. During the day, they will explore their major in an occupational setting in the Jamaican culture for three days. The group will also do a group service project to help the community, and a day will be spent climbing the famous Dunn’s River Falls, with another optional day of jumping off cliffs…don’t tell your mom that part.
Major-related experiences are individually designed. Some examples are below:
- Ag – tour of the College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE), a day at the goat farm
- Social Work- shadow a Jamaican social worker
- Business – see the micro-businesses starting to support the local economy, how a mission house is run, or visit area businesses/tourist areas
- Nursing/Pre-Med – spend a day doing home health visits, a day or two at the Jamaican Hospital, or similar health-related events
- Education and Exercise Science – work in area schools with children
This trip may be taken as a cultural experience credit.
A passport is required.
The cost of the trip is $1,800 and includes airfare and travel on the island, transportation, and admission to Dunn’s River Falls.
