WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The #RV HU women’s basketball team put up triple digits in front of their home crowd Saturday afternoon by disposing of Defiance College 106-43. It’s the first time this season the Foresters have hit the century mark and their biggest blowout since last year’s 106-36 thumping of Calumet College of St. Joseph.

Bailey Kelham led a balanced attack for Coach Maggard’s crew with a game-high 21 points. She hit a pair of freebies 15 seconds in to give her team a lead they would never surrender. There was no looking back after that as the lopsided affair saw Huntington give up just five points in the opening ten minutes for a 27-5 difference by the first break.

By halftime, the Foresters had stretched the lead to 55-17 with no signs of slowing down. HU continued to separate themselves from their guests to make for the 63-point disparity by the final horn.

Kyndra Sheets’ triple with just under two minutes remaining put her team over the 100-point mark. She went on knock down another three on the next possession and then maneuvered her way into the paint for a jumper to account for Huntington’s final eight points. The scrappy freshman finished with a career-best 15 points.

Kelham was 6-for-8 from the field which included four from downtown. Additionally, she canned all five of her free throws for her fourth straight 20+ point game. Gabi Melby also had a productive day by connecting on seven of her ten shots while hitting both of her free attempts to pour in 18 points to go along with six assists, six boards, two blocks and two steals.

Annaka Nelson rounded out Huntington’s double digit scoring with 11 points. She and Liv Raby shared rebounding honors with eight apiece. Four other Foresters scored at least six points in the debacle of DC. HU’s bench combined to score 50 points, accounting for nearly half of their team’s offensive output.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Makaiya Thomas who dropped in 14 and Chandler Duncan who came off the bench to add 13 points.

The Foresters, now 4-2, kick off conference play on Wednesday by hosting #2 Indiana Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m.
