BASEBALL

The Huntington baseball team swapped wins with Marian Friday afternoon at Forest Glen with the Knights taking the opener 12-5 and the hosts bouncing back with a 9-4 win in the nightcap.

The Foresters got off to a hot start in the opener with five straight hits in their first at-bat. It led to three runs with Beyonce Paco Paulina and Cam Clarkson each singling in a run followed by an RBI-double by Dylan Rost. The hosts added to their lead in the third with a long ball by Clarkson for a 4-0 game but the tides started to turn in the fourth.

The Knights found home in the top of the frame and then erupted for five runs on six hits and a walk in the sixth to climb on top 6-4. Mason Meyer got one back for his team in the home half of the inning after doubling his way on base and eventually scoring on a wild pitch but that was the last push for any sort of late-game heroics.

Marian put an exclamation point on their win by piling on another six runs in their last at-bat which included a two-run homer while the last four runs came on four consecutive walks with bases loaded. For the game, MU drew ten base on balls to HU’s three. The guests also outhit Huntington 13-10 which included three home runs.

Clarkson finished with two hits and two RBI while Rost and Deklan Thompson also logged multiple hits. Keegan Shovlain took the loss for Huntington. He was the second of six pitchers to spend time on the bump for Frame’s crew. He threw an inning of relief, giving up three hits, two runs and a walk.

The Foresters came away with the win in the nightcap thanks to a big fourth inning that saw them plate five runs to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 advantage. After working three walks early in the frame, HU relied on Thompson, Paulina and Beldon Glasgow to each crank out an RBI-base smack for the go ahead.

Thompson had scored on an error in the first followed by a dinger by Glasgow to match the Knights’ two runs in the top of the frame. Marian tagged two more runs on in the third to round out their scoring. Huntington wrapped up their scoring on Michael Slabaugh’s RBI-fielder’s choice in the fifth with Glasgow having the last say with a run-scoring double in the sixth.

Glasgow’s final numbers were impressive having gone 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI. Paulina chipped in two hits and two RBI while Thompson also finished with two base pokes and an RBI.

Graham Kollen was solid on the mound, giving up six hits, four runs, four walks while striking out 11 to pick up the complete-game win.

The Foresters (8-12, 3-7) are back in action Monday to finish their series with Marian (10-11, 6-4). Opening pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
