MEN’S SOCCER
The HU men’s soccer team broke through in a big way Wednesday afternoon, blanking Cornerstone 2-0 at King Stadium to notch their first win of the season. The victory moves the Foresters to 1-3-2 on the year and marks their second clean sheet of the campaign behind a six-save effort from senior keeper Jorge Gonzalez.
The matchup was the first between the two programs since 2010 when the Golden Eagles posted a 3-0 win, but this time it was the Foresters who dictated play. Coach Potter’s crew outshot their guests 18-6 and racked up seven corner kicks to CU’s five to keep the pressure tilted forward.
Junior defender Kovan Drenth gave Huntington the lead in the 22nd minute with the first goal of his collegiate career. After a ball served into the box deflected his way by way of Douglas Appiah Kubi’s head, Drenth was in the right spot to calmly slot it into side netting for the 1-0 advantage.
The Foresters doubled the margin just over 12 minutes later when Drenth turned provider. He sent a ball into the box that found Oneal David, who slid into the pass and one-timed it with his right foot into the back of the net in the 34th minute.
From there, Gonzalez and the HU backline kept the Golden Eagles at bay to preserve the shutout. Huntington now turns their attention to the road, traveling to Lawrence Tech on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff with the Blue Devils.
