Class Attendance, Thanksgiving Break, and Final Exams

CLASS ATTENDANCE REMINDER: Students are expected to be punctual and regular in class attendance and to accept responsibility for all assigned work. Any student who has been absent for as many as one-third of the total class sessions for a course will have failed and will be suspended from the course. Within this framework, each instructor may set his/her own class attendance policy, and will inform students of this policy at the beginning of the term. Class sessions missed because of illness or late registration will be counted as absences. There are no “excused” absences (illness, funerals, athletic contests, and other necessary absences are included in the total number of absences counted). In case of extenuating circumstances, a suspended student may petition the Academic Concerns Committee to be readmitted to the class. At the discretion of the faculty member, missed work may be “made up.”

Thanksgiving Break is November 23, 24, and 25, and final exams are the week of December 12. Students should not plan to leave campus early before these breaks for travel purposes. Our policy states that unless it is a family emergency, students are expected to attend classes the week prior to the break and faculty are required to meet all of their regularly scheduled classes. There are no “excused” absences (illness, funerals, athletic contests, and other necessary absences are included in the total number of absences counted). As a reminder, here is the class attendance policy from the HU Portal.

The FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE may be found here.

Travel plans are not a basis for petitioning for a for a schedule change. Faculty are under no obligation to honor requests from students to accommodate travel plans.
