MEN’S BASKETBALL

After a break for Thanksgiving, it was business as usual for the #RV HU men’s basketball team, who easily disposed of Holy Cross 94-63 Saturday afternoon at Platt Arena. With this win, the Foresters improve to 7-1 on the year.

All seven of Huntington’s wins have been double-digit decisions with today proving the third 30+ point victory. Down 10-4 to start the game, HU went off for 23 straight points over a five-minute spell to fuel the blowout.

It was 53-25 at intermission with Ben Humrichous playing a flawless first 20 minutes. The 6-8 junior went 8-for-8 from the field which included a traditional three-point play and three long balls on his way to scoring 20 points. He finished the half five points short of matching the Saints’ entire offensive output.

As a team, the Foresters went 8-for-10 from deep in the first half on the way to shooting 61.3 percent overall (19-for-31) while committing just two blunders. At the other end of the floor, the hosts limited Holy Cross (3-6) to ten field goals on 37.0 percent shooting and forced ten turnovers.

Huntington outscored the Saints by ten in the first seven minutes of the second frame to up their advantage to 38 at 74-36 for the game’s largest disparity. By the final horn, HCC had gotten seven points back, but the impact was nominal as the damage had already been done.

Humrichous missed just one shot for the game on the way to pouring in 26 points. Lane Sparks chipped in 14 points while corralling a game-best six rebounds. Mitchell Wilson accounted for 12 of HU’s 34 bench points.

For the game, Huntington shot better from beyond the arc than overall. HU canned 13 of their 20 three-point attempts for 65.0 percent while connecting on 59.3 percent (35-for-59) of their overall shots. Alford’s crew posted seven TOs, the fourth time this season they’ve committed less than ten miscues.

Nash Hostetler registered 15 points as the only Saint to post double digits.

The Foresters jump back into league play on Wednesday when they host Taylor at 7:00 p.m.
