The HU men’s and women’s golf programs headed to warmer weather over spring break to kick off the spring portion of their schedule at Showdown at Legends at the Legends Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
On the women’s side, Huntington turned in a 1066 (356-354-356) over the two-day tournament to finish sixth out of eight teams.
Leading the way for Davis’ crew was Abby Sheehan who carded a 255 (88-83-84) for 23rd place out of 42 golfers. Danielle Tinsley was next in line for the Foresters with a 27th place score of 260 (86-88-86). Lauren Slottke posted a 271 (88-93-90) to finish 30th. Grace Dill shot a 281 (94-90-97) while Akira Seals fired a 290 (98-96-96) for 34th and 35th place respectively.
“With it being our first tournament we had some winter rust to knock off, and we definitely had some rust,” said Coach Patrick Davis. “We did not play our best, but each player had stretches of great golf. We are excited to get back on campus so we can work on our weaknesses in order to be ready for our next tournament back home.”
UNOH won the women’s title with a 944 followed by Cumberlands (947), Taylor (949), Lindsey Wilson (957), Kansas Wesleyan (1023), HU (1066), Mount Vernon (1136) and St. Andrews (1166).
The HU women are back in action April 1 for the IU Kokomo Spring Invitational.
The Forester men posted a three-round score of 978 (317-328-333) to finish tenth overall. Colby Martin paced Dwyer’s crew with a 244 (85-77-82) to finish 53rd out of 75 golfers. Brenner Lampton posted a 247 (77-88-82) to claim 55th place while Kaleb Ketchum (86-80-84) and Quin Edwards (78-83-89) each fired a 250 for a share of 59th place. One stroke back was Carter Roseboom with a 251 (77-89-85).
“With it being our first tournament there was quite a bit of rust, but we were able to take some positives from the week that we will take with us as we work to get better for our next tournament,” said Coach Connor Dwyer. “It wasn’t our best performance but the guys know they are better and are ready to work for next time.”
Host Lindsey Wilson took home the title with a 879 followed by Marian (890), Taylor (894), Univ. of the Cumberlands (899), Cumberland Univ. (912), St. Andrews (921), Morningside (929), Montreat (958), Rio Grande (971), HU (978) and Mount Vernon (999).
Next up for Huntington is the Garn Championship on March 27-28.
