VOLLEYBALL

The Huntington volleyball team made quick work of IU Northwest Saturday night in front of a big crowd at Huntington North High School. The Foresters needed less than 90 minutes to sweep the RedHawks, 25-16, 25-21, 25-14.

It’s the second time this season HU has blanked an opponent as they move to 6-1 on the year while IUNW (0-5) is still in want of their first win.

After spotting their guests a 3-0 lead, the Foresters battled back to surge in front at 5-4. It was a lead they never surrendered the rest of the night and setting the tone was sophomore middle blocker Leah Carter who accounted for four of her team’s first six kills.

Offensively, it was Huntington’s most efficient outing this fall. As a team, Herber’s squad logged a .292 hitting percentage compared to the RedHawks’ .061. Morgan Robrock organized a balanced attack by dishing out 41 assists with four different Foresters collecting at least eight kills.

Kortney Grimm led the pack with 12 kills while Haley Kruse added ten. Trevyn Terry posted nine kills on 16 swings for a .500 kill percentage. Leah Carter was even more economical having put down eight kills on 15 swings without any errors for an impressive .533 hitting percentage.

Layla Meyer took charge of the defense by racking up 24 digs. Olivia Krahn also finished in double digits with 14.

“Our middles establishing themselves offensively to begin the match is what created our offensive success,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “We need to improve our passing so we can continue to utilize our middles effectively.

“The energy in the gym was a lot of fun tonight. It was a great team win, and we loved having our freshman class there to support us!”

Next up is a 7:00 p.m. match up with Siena Heights on Wednesday at Huntington North.
