MEN’S GOLF

The HU men’s golf team brought home gold from the Cardinal Classic by topping the field of ten teams with a three-round score of 901. It’s the first time the Foresters have claimed a team title since September of 2014 when the program won the Midwest Collegiate Championship hosted by William Penn.

“I’m really proud how the guys played all weekend,” said Coach Connor Dwyer. “We left some shots out the first two days, but we really played well in the final round. We had a lot of career lows.

“I’m so happy we got this off our chest. We have been knocking on the door and falling short, so it felt really good to come and win. This is a huge step for the program, and I am excited to see where we go from here.”

After two rounds on Monday, Huntington was four strokes out of first to Spring Arbor but more than made up that difference by firing a three-over-par 291 as a team on Tuesday to flip flop spots with SAU.

Peyton Richmond was the individual medalist, carding a five-under-par 67 in his final round on the way to posting a 218 (74-77-67). Mitchell Wilson shot a lower score each round to finish third out of 57 golfers with a 224 (76-75-73). Both players earned All-Tournament Team honors.

Carter Roseboom came in next for Dwyer’s crew with a 228 (72-76-80) for tenth place. Luke VanDeventer posted a 236 (82-81-73) to claim 23rd place. Colby Martin turned in a 239 (83-78-78) for the No. 29 spot. Playing as an individual, Trey Spring shot a 254 (85-86-83) for 48th place.

“Carter had a career low 72 in round one and Peyton had a career low 67 today. This tourney also marks Peyton’s first career college win,” noted Dwyer. “Mitch also put together three solid rounds and Colby fought hard and finished the last two rounds really strong.

“Colby also made the tournament-clinching putt on his last hole. I’m also very proud of Luke, he really struggled the first two rounds but bounced back with a career-low round to help put us over the edge.”

Spring Arbor finished second with a 905 followed by Indiana Tech (919), Lourdes (937), Saint Francis (946), Cleary (949), Madonna (951), UM Dearborn (951), Siena Heights (952) and CUAA (972).

The Foresters are back in action on Friday for the Delaware Shootout in Muncie.
