BOWLING
The HU bowling program had its last regular season conference tournament on Friday. The day featured four team games and 16 Bakers games at Colonial City Lanes in Ohio. The weekend wrapped up the regular season for all of college bowling.
The Forester men got back on track this weekend to lead the tournament early before finishing third with a score of 6960. Senior Daniel Burzynski not only led the Foresters with an average of 224.3 for four games but topped the 65-player field to be deemed the individual champion and earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Joining Burzynski on the All-Tourney Team was Dale Horstmann who took third with his 205.3 per game average.
“I am really proud of how the guys responded this week after a less than desirable Hoosier Classic a few days earlier,” said Coach Mike Shockey. “They were tough and gritty all day and worked well together.”
The JV guys also started out strong, recording the highest score of any team in the first field game with a 1010. They ended up in second place with 6641 when all was said and done. Jason Paslean led the JV team with an average of 196 per game which placed him 11th overall among the entire men’s field. HU placed six bowlers in the top 20 on the men’s side of the tournament.
The Huntington women went undefeated on the day to bring home the victory with a score of 6772. The Foresters won by a mere two pins with it all coming down the last ball of the tourney. Brooklyn Suzuki led her team with an average of 210.5, good for third place overall and a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Hannah Hamilton was also named to the All-Tourney Team by finishing fifth with a 198.75 average.
The JV women also had a solid outing to finish second with a pin count of 5984. Lilly Pryor the team with an average of 188.25/game. Her average was the second highest among field of JV women. Just like the men’s team, the HU women placed six players in the top 20 individually.
“This was easily the best team effort we have had all season,” said Shockey. “The ladies were engaged and did a great job communicating moves and transitions with each other. The coaches have known all season that they had the talent to win, but to see them set themselves up to win and then finish was very rewarding.”
At the conclusion of the tourney, the JV All-Conference awards were announced with Huntington well represented in the accolades. Amanda-Lynn Turner was tabbed the JV women’s player of the year and earned a spot on the First Team All-Conference Team. Joining her as a First Team honoree was Allison Slanker. Alissa Jacovetti and Katie Reyes were Second Team All-Conference picks.
On the men’s side, Nathan Brazeau and Landon Hutchens were deemed First Team All-Conference while Michael Lichtenberg was named to the Second Team.
The Crossroads League Championships are slated for February 29 in Jackson, Mich.
