The HU baseball team handed Mount Vernon their first conference loss, a 6-3 decision, Friday afternoon at the Cougar Baseball Field. HU’s win came in the nightcap after the hosts got the best of Frame and crew, 4-3, in the opener.

Game one featured a walk-off ending. The Foresters mounted a 3-0 lead in the third on a Gregory Nolasco Berroa sacrifice fly followed by a Jordan Malott two-run double a few batters later for an advantage that would stick until the ninth.

The Cougars finally got on the board in the seventh for a 3-1 difference, but they saved their best for last. With runners on the corners, a sac fly started MVNU’s comeback in the ninth.  A single and hit batter later, Rider Minnick came up with a clutch walk-off two-run single for the win.

Matt Wolff accounted for two of Huntington’s five hits.

Tyler Papenbrock tossed the first seven innings during which he gave up three hits, one run and two walks while striking out eight for the no decision. Grant Simmons was charged with the loss after surrendering three hits, three runs and a walk while fanning one in 1.2 innings of work.

Cam Clarkson fueled Huntington’s win in game two. The junior transfer singled in his team’s first two runs in the second and then cranked one of the park for a two-run blast in the sixth.

The sixth also saw Sebastian Kuhns drive in a run just prior to Clarkson’s big at bat. Matt Wolff put the finishing touches on the W with an RBI-single in the seventh.

Graham Kollen tossed a dandy to pick up his second win of the year. He allowed seven hits, three runs, only one of which was earned, and struck out two while striking out four in 6.1 innings of work. Jonathan Baker earned his first save of the season after working the final two outs.

The Foresters (11-10, 6-4) face Mount Vernon again at noon tomorrow to wrap up their regular season series with the Cougars.
