WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Foresters women’s soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Tuesday afternoon in their season opener at King Stadium. It matched the identical score of last year’s opening day at SMWC.
HU struck first in the 13th minute when Jianna Simons found herself in front of an open net thanks to a crossed ball from Sophie Shepherd. She took full advantage of the picture perfect pass by pummeling it back netting in her first start and first goal in Forester green.
The guests’ equalizer came just minutes later for a 1-1 deadlock that held well into the second frame. While Coach David Lewis’ crew were the notable aggressors throughout the final 45 minutes, the Pomeroys (1-1) made the most of their few opportunities. With nine minutes remaining, Kennedy Trigg beat HU’s backline to drill a shot far post for the game-winner.
The Foresters outshot SMWC 9-5 with Ireland Aerni taking the loss in goal having finished with one save. Huntington (0-1) is back in action Thursday to host Freed-Hardeman at 7:00 p.m.
