WOMEN’S SOCCER
Saturday afternoon the Huntington women’s soccer team provided a life lesson in never giving up. The Foresters scored with seven seconds remaining to knot things up at 1-1 against IU East at Eaton High School in a non-conference thriller.
It was Elana McGinnis who sent her team into a frenzy by scoring with only a few ticks remaining. Sophie Shepherd set the stage for McGinnis’ heroics when she ripped a shot from just inside the 18 that was deflected by the IU East keeper in the direction of McGinnis who was able to get her head on it and send it back netting.
McGinnis has played in four games for HU with today’s goal her second of the season.
The Foresters were on defense most of the first half as evidenced by IU East’s 9-0 advantage in shots taken but the two teams headed into intermission in a 0-0 deadlock. A chance to regroup served Coach Lewis’ crew well as they were able to fire off five shots while holding their hosts to three in the final 45 minutes.
As a team, HU managed five total shots to IU East’s 12 but shots on goal were a bit more balanced at 6-4 in favor of the Red Wolves.
Ireland Aerni finished with five saves in goal to earn the draw. With today’s tie, Huntington heads into league play with a 5-1-2 record. The Foresters have over a week’s break before traveling to Goshen for their conference opener on September 25 at 7:00 p.m.
