The Huntington baseball team locked up the regular season series against Spring Arbor on Saturday afternoon with a sweep at Forest Glen, posting wins of 7-3 and 6-3. Combined with Thursday’s split, the Foresters claim the 3-1 series win over the Cougars (26-20, 16-16).
Cam Clarkson was untouchable in the opener, driving in nearly half of HU’s runs with three consecutive RBI-doubles. The senior designated hitter opened up the scoring with run-scoring doubles in the first and third innings, later coming around to score on a Bryce Deckman sac bunt in the third.
Clarkson’s third double came in the fourth, capping a three-run frame that also featured RBI-singles from Beyonce Paco Paulina and Deklan Thompson. The Foresters added an insurance run in the eighth when Paulina scored on a wild pitch.
Huntington had built a 6-0 lead before Spring Arbor managed to break through with a run in the fifth. Clarkson was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
RJ Anglin picked up the win on the mound. The sophomore right-hander tossed seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out three.
The Foresters wasted no time in game two, putting up five runs across the first three innings. Clarkson stayed hot with an RBI-double in the first to kick off the scoring.
Zach Pelletier added a run-scoring single in the second, and HU erupted for three more in the third, highlighted by Beldon Glasgow’s towering solo shot over the right field fence, his 12th homer of the season.
Glasgow tacked on another RBI in the fourth with a single to right, finishing the game with a team-best two hits and two RBI.
Grant Simmons took control of the nightcap, holding Spring Arbor hitless through the first three innings and not allowing a run until the fourth. He finished with 5.2 innings pitched, surrendering just two hits and three runs while striking out three in the winning effort.
Reliever Mason Meyer closed the door for HU, coaxing a flyout to end the sixth and fanning all three batters he faced in the seventh to earn the save.
With the sweep, the Foresters improve to 22-21 overall and 17-15 in Crossroads League play. HU is back in action Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. when they host IU Columbus for a single nine-inning contest.
