The #25 Forester baseball team split Friday’s Crossroads League doubleheader with Goshen at Forest Glen, dropping the opener 8-4 before bouncing back to take the nightcap 4-3.
Game 1 – Goshen 8, Huntington 4
The Maple Leafs came out swinging and never let up, jumping in front 4-0 through three innings before Huntington chipped away to claw back into contention.
The Foresters answered in the fourth with RBI singles from Kade Flores and Keifer Wilson before Cam Clarkson cut the deficit to one with a run-scoring knock in the sixth. By the seventh, HU had evened things up at 4-4, capitalizing on a Goshen error to complete the comeback.
But Goshen had the final say.
The Maple Leafs reclaimed the lead in the eighth and added three insurance runs in the ninth, highlighted by a solo homer from Fernando Marte Santana, to pull away for the win.
Despite the loss, Huntington’s offense stayed active, racking up 12 hits and seven walks, but couldn’t capitalize consistently, stranding 15 runners on base. Braden Kauffman led the way with a 3-hit effort, while Flores added two hits and an RBI. Wilson and Clarkson also drove in runs.
On the mound, Carter Wilkinson was tagged with the loss in relief. He struck out two over 1.1 innings but surrendered four runs as Goshen surged late.
Game 2 – Huntington 4, Goshen 3
The nightcap started in familiar fashion with Goshen striking first, using Aidan Calvey’s three-run homer in the opening frame to grab a quick 3-0 lead.
This time, Huntington responded – and finished.
Wilson ignited the comeback in the fourth, blasting a two-run homer to cut the deficit to one. Moments later, Flores delivered again with an RBI single to knot things up at 3-3. From there, it turned into a gritty, small-ball win.
In the sixth, RJ Anglin, pinch running after a Tanner Reinartz walk, made things happen. He swiped second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored the go-ahead run on another passed ball to give HU its first lead of the day.
The Foresters made the most of limited opportunities, scoring four runs on five hits while swiping four bases to apply pressure throughout. Wilson finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Flores added another RBI knock.
On the mound, Max Engle set the tone with eight strikeouts over five innings, keeping HU within striking distance. Dylan Eggl slammed the door late, tossing two hitless, scoreless innings to secure the win.
With the split, Huntington moves to 24-9 overall and 14-8 in Crossroads League play. The Foresters return to Forest Glen on Monday to wrap up the series with Goshen. First pitch is TBD.
