The HU bowling program headed to the mitten on Saturday for the WHAC Championships where the women took fourth and the men finished fifth. The weekend started with 16 baker games. The field was then cut to the top four teams for a best of five match play games to determine the conference champion.

The Huntington women snatched up the fourth spot with a baker score of 2958 to make the cut to match play. Up against top-seeded Indiana Tech in first round action, the Foresters started off strong by winning the first two games, 184-175, 241-201, before the Warriors figured out the pair of lanes to mount an impressive comeback. Tech won the next three, 182-157, 213-182, 235-163, to claim the match victory. The Warriors would go on to win it all.

“Overall, it was a decent day,” said Coach Mike Shockey. “The ladies fought hard to make sure we made the top four and came out with a great amount of intensity. I think in game three we caught a couple bad breaks and missed a few spares, and it changed the momentum of the match that we just couldn’t get back in our favor.

“We learned a great lesson though. We learned what it was to bowl great and what it felt like to let it get away. It’s a hard lesson, but one we learned from and will not so easily forget moving forward into postseason play.”

The HU men bowled well and were in position to make the top four until the last pair of lanes proved difficult to strike on. The men scored a total of 3155 pins to finish fifth overall.

“I was really happy with the guys today,” said Shockey. “The lanes didn’t play the exact way we thought they would, and the guys adapted and got themselves back into contention.”

Shockey and crew have a few weeks off until competing in the Western Shootout slated for March 27-28.
