SOFTBALL

The Huntington softball team picked up a pair of road wins, 2-1, 5-1, over Asbury University (4-14) Friday afternoon at the Kirkland Complex to improve to 9-3 on the year.

After giving up a run on two hits in the bottom of the first, Meghan Fretz slammed the door on the Eagles’ offense by allowing just two base pokes over the next four frames to notch her fourth win of the year. Adelyn Harsh spent the final two innings in the circle, giving up just one hit, to work the save.

While the Foresters hammered out 12 hits, it didn’t affect the scoreboard until the sixth when they pieced together four of them and took advantage of two botched plays to touch home twice for the go ahead at 2-1. Kaela Robey, who reached base on a single to left, eventually scored her team’s first run on a passed ball after which Kiera Stacy drove in in run number two with an RBI-single.

Stacy finished with two hits and Huntington’s only RBI while Jada Crofoot and Darby Minor tallied three and two hits respectively.

The Foresters didn’t wait so long to generate offense in the nightcap. Gower’s crew scored twice in their opening at bat on RBI-singles by Abigail Reed and Minor, to claim a lead they wouldn’t relent. The Eagles got one back in the fourth to close to within one at 2-1 but HU tacked on three insurance runs in the final two frames to cruise to the win.

Reed picked up a second RBI on an infield single in the seventh. She finished with three of Huntington’s nine hits to pace her team at the plate. Minor added two hits and an RBI. Robey registered a pair of base pokes including her sixth double of the year.

Mica Allen spent the first 3.2 innings on the mound to tally the win. The rookie hurler gave up four hits, one run and three walks before being relieved by Harsh who needed just 33 pitches to close out the game and earn her second save of the day. In 3.1 innings of work, she scattered just two hits.

The Foresters are back at it on Saturday with a doubleheader at #22 IU Southeast.
