Philosophy Club

Hello, Everyone:

This is Dr. Tedla Woldeyohannes. I teach philosophy at HU. I started a philosophy discussion group, which we can call a “philosophy club,” sometime during the last spring semester (2021).

The philosophy club resumes its meetings for anyone who is interested in philosophical questions such as: Does God exist? How do we know God’s existence? Is Christianity true? How do we know whether Christianity is true? What is the relationship between God and logic? What is science? How is science different from philosophy and theology? Can science give us knowledge of ultimate reality? Does advancement in science make belief in God unscientific (irrational)? And: What is truth? How do we know truth? Do moral values exist? If so, how? How is morality possible if there is no God? What is the relationship between morality and God? What does it mean to be human? Or, what makes humans what we are?

We discuss most of the above questions in one or another of our philosophy classes, most of them in the Introduction to Philosophy class. But class time is limited to cover topics planned for a semester. In the philosophy club, we can pick any topic and pursue the question to a much greater depth. Hence, you’re most welcome to pursue these philosophical questions and others at the philosophy club. Knowledge liberates when ignorance enslaves. I’m sure we will choose the pursuit of knowledge to minimize ignorance.

The philosophy club will meet every other Friday from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. We’ll also watch short video clips (10-15 minutes) on interesting philosophical topics before the regular meeting. You’ll have maximum freedom at the philosophy club to raise any question about anything. Philosophers love questions, any, and we will work on finding answers to those questions as a collaborative intellectual enterprise. The motto for our club: You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

The first meeting for the philosophy club will be on September 10, 2021, at 5:15 p.m. Venue for the meeting: Loew-Brenn Hall, 2nd floor, the common area in front of my office #223.
