VOLLEYBALL

The HU volleyball team picked an impressive 3-1 road win, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16, 26-24, over Grace (6-7, 1-4 ) Wednesday night at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

The win snaps a four-game win streak the Lancers held over the Foresters and proved Coach Herber’s first W of her three-year tenure over GC.

“I am incredibly proud of this team tonight,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “We put into action all of the things we discussed this week that would be important for us moving forward. This was a great team win.”

After trading sets with their hosts to open the contest, Huntington ran away with set three and then stormed back from a 17-13 deficit to take set four for the victory.

Junior transfer De’Janea Johnson had a monster night by racking up a career-best 19 kills on 35 swings. She committed just three attacking errors on the way to posting an inspiring .457 hitting percentage. Another newcomer in freshman Kortney Grimm also had a big night for Herber by tallying 12 kills while middles Tya Bynum and Lindsay Ingenito put down nine and eight kills respectively.

Morgan Robrock was sensational at keeping her team organized by handing out a career-best 42 assists to go along with posting eight digs and four kills.

As a team, tonight proved Huntington’s most efficient offensive outing of the year. They notched ten more kills than the Lancers and finished with a season-best .278 hitting percentage.

Defensively, Makailah Thompson collected 16 digs as one of three Foresters to finish with double-digit digs. Grimm picked up 12 while Johnson tracked down ten. Mayah Schundelmier was also a critical defender late in the match as the rookie finished with seven digs in addition to logging a pair of kills from the back row.

“DJ was unstoppable on the outside tonight and Mayah came in as a spark in the back row for us,” noted Herber. “I could not be more proud of their performances and the energy they brought to the court.”

With this win, Huntington improve to 7-7 overall, 2-3 in league action. HU hits the road again on Friday, their second of three straight road games, to face #16 Indiana Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
