The Crossroads of Race: J-Term 2022

While we commonly associate the Civil Rights Movement with the American South, Indiana has had its own history with the triumphs of the Underground Railroad, education, Black business development, and desegregation movements, and the tragedies and evils of Klan violence, lynchings, and segregation. This course will include a week-long tour of sites relevant to the state’s Black history in South Bend, Grant County, Fountain City, Indianapolis, Evansville, Madison, and possibly New Albany. We’ll hear from activists in South Bend and Evansville, and we’ll see where freedom seekers were able to build free lives.

A course fee of $250 will be due by December 10; it will cover transportation, lodging, tickets, and evening meals. Most of the course readings will be free; one book will cost about $15. For more information, please contact me at jheller@huntington.edu.
