VOLLEYBALL

It was a battle from start to finish between the HU volleyball team and Spring Arbor Saturday afternoon at the McDonald Athletic Center that eventually favored the hosts in five, 25-18, 26-28, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12.

The Cougar win draws the season series even with the Foresters as HU came out on top 3-2 the last time these two teams met at the beginning of the month. Today marked the start of the second round of league play. Both teams now have a 3-7 league record while Huntington’s overall record stands at 8-11 and Spring Arbor’s at 10-12.

Morgan Robrock didn’t play favorites to make for a well-balanced Forester attack. The 6-0 setter dished out 52 dimes to go along with ten digs. Tya Bynum edged out her teammates to enjoy team-high kill honors with 14 while Lindsay Ingenito and Kortney Grimm pitched in 13 kills apiece. De’Janea Johnson and Anna Lewis added nine and seven kills respectively.

Hannah Maier took charge of the backrow by tallying 23 digs while several others also logged double-digit digs including Grimm (13), Maddie Boomershine (12) and Makailah Thompson (11).

“We struggled in tip coverage today but started to pick that up by the end of the match,” said Coach Kelsey Herber. “We need to continue to develop passing consistency so we can run all of our offensive options when the match is on the line.

“I want our attackers to have an aggressor’s mindset. When the match is tight, they need to prioritize scoring rather than playing it safe and avoiding an error. We play our best volleyball when we bring vocal energy and intensity to the floor. However, we did not implement that until set three.”

The Foresters are on the road again Wednesday for a rematch with #RV Taylor at 7:00 p.m.
