The Forester men’s soccer team’s march through league play continued Saturday night at Mount Vernon (6-4, 1-2) where they picked up their second CL road win, this time a 2-1 decision, to improve to 7-4-1 overall, 2-0-1 in conference action.

The Cougars got the edge early on with a quick goal but there was no panic in Huntington. Instead, the visitors tied it by halftime when Noah Stanford from the top of the box slotted Eric Ocock in. The senior mid did not disappoint as he calmly finished the ball low for his fourth goal of the season at the 35:38 mark.

Despite being outshot 9-5 in the final 45 minutes; Huntington got the critical tie-breaking goal with ten minutes remaining. This time Pablo Garcia, just inside the box, found Jonas Musselman who in a maze of people, fired a crisp ball that wrong-footed the MVNU keeper for what proved the game-winner.

“We definitely got our reward tonight,” said Coach Russ Lawson. “For going down early, I’m tremendously proud of the guys’ response to keep fighting. Mount Vernon is very good. They are dangerous team that can get you on the counter.

“I thought we did well for large portions of the game to earn this win.”

Huntington finished the match with nine shots, six on frame, to Mount Vernon’s 14 shots, five of which were on target. Gabe Greenfield logged four saves to notch the win between the posts.

So far this fall, HU has outscored their opponents 27-12. With plenty of soccer still to be played, the Foresters are second in the league standings, a half-game behind Bethel. Lawson and crew return to King Stadium on Saturday to host Grace at 2:00 p.m.
