WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The #21 Mount Vernon Cougars had their hands full Saturday afternoon at Platt Arena before pulling away in the final few minutes to log a 74-63 win over the Forester women’s basketball team. With the win, MVNU remains perfect in league play at 4-0 and 9-2 overall.

Trailing by as many as 14 in the second frame, Huntington wasn’t about to go away. Celeste Ryman’s triple, her fourth of the contest, with five minutes remaining knotted things up at 60-60. It capped off a 13-0 run that spanned the first half of the of the fourth quarter.

Ruby Bolon started things off for HU with a jumper from the top of the key after which five other Foresters put the ball in the hole over the next five minutes to grind out the comeback.

Unfortunately, a timeout got the visitors back on track. MVNU, who came into the afternoon averaging over 77 points per game, scored on every possession to close out the game to secure their double-digit win by the final horn.

After trading the lead in the first few minutes of the game, Mount Vernon took the lead midway through the quarter on the way to enjoying a 23-17 lead by the first break. The Foresters spent the next stanza outscoring their guests by two to make for a four-point spread of 41-37 by halftime.

HU also put two more points on the board than Mount Vernon in the fourth but the third was their demise. MVNU enjoyed a 19-10 tilt in the third to make for an uphill battle for Culler and crew the rest of the way.

Celeste Ryman led a balanced Huntington attack by pouring in a season-tying 14 points to go along with four assists and two steals. Emily Seboe chipped in ten points and claimed a team-best eight rebounds.

Bolon came off the bench to add a career-high nine points in addition to pulling down three offensive boards. Maddy Robrock finished with eight points. Dazia Drake and Jenessa Hasty sparked HU off the bench by scoring seven points each as well as collecting four rebounds apiece.

Maggie Coe, the league’s second leader scorer, topped MVNU with 20 points. Sage Brannon and Rylee Pireu tossed in 13 points apiece while Maggie Coblentz finished with 11.

The Foresters (2-9, 0-4) take a break from CL action to tip-off with IU Kokomo on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
