The Forester baseball team dropped both games, 13-0, 17-16, Friday afternoon in the first of two doubleheaders at Mount Vernon.
MVNU, currently sitting atop the league standings, flexed their offensive muscle to which Huntington couldn’t match in the first game after which the Foresters came up just short in the nightcap where the final score resembled more of a football than baseball score.
The Cougars (33-14, 26-8) needed just seven hits while taking advantage of eight walks and three hit batters to find home 13 times in the opener while HU managed just two hits at the bat of Daniel Lichty and Ian McCutcheon. It’s the third time this season Frame’s crew has been shutout.
Joey Butz took the loss for HU by tossing the first 2.2 innings where he gave up six hits, six runs and five walks while striking out three.
The nightcap was a wild one that eventually tipped in MVNU’s favor on a walk-off single in the eighth. While it proved for an exciting finish, the third inning provided more entertainment.
Fourteen batters, seven hits, four walks, two stolen bases and an error in the top of the frame allowed the guests to touch home ten times. Not to be outdone, Mount Vernon erupted for seven runs on six hits, one of which was a grand slam, two walks and two stolen bases.
Both teams had scored three runs prior to make for a 13-10 HU lead with still plenty of game to be had. Huntington held onto their advantage until the sixth when MVNU plated three runs to claim their first lead of the contest at 15-14.
HU tied things up by scoring on a wild throw in the seventh to extend the game an extra inning where Owen Young’s solo shot gave the Foresters the smell of victory only to have it snuffed out in the bottom of the frame when the hosts manufactured two runs to sign off on the win.
HU finished with 14 hits which included Owens’ dinger and Sam Kimmorley’s three-run blast in the second. Langston Ginder added four hits and an RBI. Jarret Gray added three hits and two RBI.
Isaac Horton was tagged with the loss having given up the last two hits which included the game-winner in the eighth.
HU (23-20, 20-14) returns to Cougar Field again tomorrow to face Mount Vernon for their final doubleheader of the regular season.
