BOWLING

The Huntington bowling teams headed north over the weekend to compete in their third of four league tournaments, WHAC Jamboree #3, over the weekend. The HU women finished second overall among the 12-team field while the men took eighth.

The Forester women had a consistent day of bowling to top their pod with 4613 pints. Senior DaYanira Garza had a breakout day to lead the team with a 613 (204.3 per game average) for third place which landed her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  Kayli Iorio (575) and Paige New (567) finished 12th and 16th respectively for Shockey’s crew.

“We didn’t strike as much as I would have hoped for, but some really strong spare shooting saved the day for us,” noted Coach Mike Shockey. “I am really proud of DaYanira’s performance. She has grown into a solid player and has been bowling really well this year. She definitely earned her spot on the all-tournament team this weekend.

“I’m happy with the finish position for the weekend, but even more excited that the ladies weren’t satisfied with a good finish. I think they now believe in their potential and are hungry to get after taking their performance to the next level.”

The Huntington men bowled much better than a week ago and finished the day with a score of 4753 for eighth place overall, third in their pod. Senior Austin Schultz led the team with a score of 598 (199.3 per game average). Derek Leyba was one pin back at 597 for 22nd place.

“The guys are getting better every week and never seem to get down on themselves for too long,” said Shockey. “Right now, the biggest thing we are missing is consistency with making good quality shots every time. We’re definitely going to be practicing on making this better over the next couple weeks with the Hoosier Classic and Conference Championship tournaments coming soon.”

WHAC Jamboree #4 is slated for Saturday in Adrian, Mich.
