DNP Project

Dear 18-19-year-old college student,

I am reaching out to invite you to participate in a scholarly practice project (SPP) aimed at assessing emotional intelligence (EI) and self-esteem in 18-19-year-old college students and how these can affect your resilience. This project is gathering information for future recommendations to be made to the administration to increase student services.

Purpose and benefit

The purpose of the project is to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and self-esteem and the impact they have on the resilience of 18-19-year-old college students. By participating in the project, you will be providing information that could affect nursing care, promote early mental health screening and support strategies, and guide educational programs for other college students and the faculty/staff that work to support you.

Underlying problem

The first year of college is a time of significant behavioral, physical, and emotional growth and a time of vulnerability (Irshad & Lone, 2025). During this vulnerable time, it is important that students learn to understand their emotions and why you may respond the way you do. Emotional intelligence is shown to be important to students due to the link with your academic performance from high school to college attendance (Toscano-Hermoso et al., 2020). Decades of research into self-esteem shows that it affects your relationships, school, work, mental health, physical health, and your social behaviors (Orth & Robins, 2022).

Eligibility criteria

Inclusion: Must be 18-19 years old, attending college, and be taking classes at either College A or College B. You can be taking classes in-person or online in any university program.

Exclusion: Under the age of 18 or aged 20 years and older or if you are in or beyond your second year of college and beyond.

Students must be able to read, write, and understand English since this is the language the surveys will be offered in.

What’s next?

If you are interested in participating in the project, please review the informed consent and complete the three surveys using this link: https://regiscollege.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1XQLKRweBtkvXZc. Your participation in the project is voluntary and no identifiable information will be collected or shared.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to help yourself, fellow students, and future students to grow further in the understanding of emotional intelligence, self-esteem, and how they impact your mental well-being.

Gratefully,

Corie Mueller, RN, MSN, CPNP-PC, PMHS
